LinkedIn is probably the most popular social networking site for business. It is geared to making connections in the professional world. So while, in my opinion, it is the least fun of all the social media, it’s still a good idea to have an account. (Especially if you have a job or hope to have one in the future.)
Here are some tips for LinkedIn:
- 1. Fill out your profile as completely as possible. LinkedIn will give you a percentage that shows you how close you are to complete. To be fully profiled on LinkedIn, you will have to solicit and get references from co-workers or past bosses and employees.'
- 2. Make it easy to connect. Use your first and last names and e-mail address so more people can get a hold of you. The fear of identity theft isn’t extremely high if you just reveal your full name. (You can give me your social security and credit card numbers later.)
- 3. Make your profile personal, and not just a resume. Give some tidbits about who you are and what motivates you. Although to be perfectly honest, LinkedIn does function like a huge resume mill. Still, try to keep it interesting.
- 4. Participate in the answers forum. LinkedIn has an extensive and active forum for questions and answers. It’s a nice way to help others and it also puts you in a position of authority.
So there it is, four tips to help you on LinkedIn. Have fun, but not too much fun. LinkedIn is a serious place.
